The Song of the Dodo
David Quammen
Quammen's 1996 classic traces island biogeography from Darwin and Wallace to the modern extinction crisis, built around a single lasting image: cut a Persian rug into a dozen pieces, and you don't get a dozen smaller rugs, you get fragments that unravel. It's the same logic behind why fragmenting a habitat costs more than the math of area alone predicts, the founding idea behind No Net Loss and corridor design.
